Registration for the program and any events requiring registration begins Saturday, June 3rd!

1) Sign Up!

Visit the Children’s Department to sign-up for either the Pre-Readers program or Readers Program.

Readers Program: Children in K- entering Grade 6 can register.  Goal is to read 10 hours by Friday, August 11th.  Simply color in a circle on our take-home reading log for every 20 minutes read.

Pre-Readers Program: Babies – PreK children complete 20 activities on a summer activity sheet.

2) Read & Win Prizes!

Visit the Children’s Room Desk to show us your progress, and you can submit an entry into our weekly reading raffles.

Raffle prizes include gift certificates to Frosty Freez, Island Cinemas, and more!

3) Be a Summer Reading Champion!

If you’ve read 10 hours for your reading log or finished 20 activities on our Pre-Readers activity sheet, you’ll receive:

  • 1 free book and Reading Champion tote bag
  • Reading certificate
  • Children in the Readers program also earn a raffle ticket for grand prize (Kindle Fire!) and runner-up prizes.  Children who complete our Pre-Readers program are entered into a raffle for a $50 gift card to Barnes and Noble bookstore.  We will notify winners by phone.
  • Feel free to pick up your prizes at any time; no need to wait till August 11th!

  • Saturday, June 24th @ 2pm -Summer Reading Kick-Off Movie Event featuring the Lego Batman Movie.
  • Thursday, June 29th @ 10:30am – Painting class with Mermaid Masterpieces. Ages 6-12, registration required.
  • Saturday, July 1st, from 11am-12pm – STEAM Play Day
  • Thursday, July 6th from 2-4pm – STEM Science Lab.
  • Monday, July 10th @ 1pm – Music and Movement with playScience.
  • Thursday, July 13th from 2-4pm – STEM Science Lab.
  • Saturday, July 15th, from 11am-12pm – STEAM Play Day
  • Wednesday, July 19th @ 11am – Farm Fresh RI.
  • Thursday, July 20th from 2-4pm – STEM Science Lab.

  • Thursday, July 27th @ 11am – Fort Building with RIMOSA. Limited to 25; registration required.

  • Summer Reading Finale! Friday, August 11th @ 11am – Hula Dancing with World Dance and Music.

 

Tween and Teen Summer Reading Events

Farm Fresh RI for Tween & Teens:  Thursday, July 6th.  11:00 AM -12:00 PM.  Ages 10 and up.  The program is led by a chef and features delicious and seasonal produce from Rhode Island farms.  Everyone helps the chef prepare a delicious snack that features RI grown food.

 

Bogie Bookend Putting Challenge: Tuesday, July 11th @ 1pm.  Registration required; ages 8-12.  Build a library themed putting course and challenge other golfers to beat your score.  So bring your swing for some mini-golf fun.

Tween Snacks in the Stacks:  Wednesday, July 12th @ 2:30pm.  Snacks in the Stacks is a book chat for tweens, ages 8-12.  Registration required.  Meet up to talk about books you’ve read, are reading, and want to read next.  There’s no assigned book, just share what you’ve liked or disliked about what book you are currently reading.  Hosted by the Children’s Librarian, and snacks will be served.

Dancing Threads Sewing Class:  Tuesday, July 18th.  11:00 AM – 1:00 PM.  Registration required; ages 10 and up.  An introduction to hand sewing.  You will learn 3-4 basic embroidery stitches, then design you own piece of art using a light box, pens, embroidery hoop and thread.  All materials are provided, and students go home with a piece of art and supplies to create more on their own.

 

Teen Improv! : Tuesday, July 25th.  11:00 AM – 12:00 PM.  Registration required; ages 13 and up.  Do you want to laugh, play and be silly? Crack jokes and try out your acting skills? Come and play at Improv with Jess!  This is the perfect introduction to improv comedy and acting for those who want to get on stage or just try something new and fun.  Be prepared to laugh and have a hilarious time!

 

Iron Chef Tweens: Build a Better Sandwich.  Wednesday, July 26th @ 11am.  Registration required, age 8-12 only.  In Iron Chef Tweens: Build a Better Sandwich, tweens will be culinary challenged to create the best sandwich they can with the ingredients given to them.  A secret ingredient that must be used will be revealed.  What will it be?  Contestants must also creatively plate their creations and write up a menu-worthy description for our judges.
