The Director began a Food For Fines program at the Library in December 2007. At that time the primary food bank for Newport County, The Martin Luther King Center in Newport, had approximately 100 registered clients. Because the time of greatest need occurs during the summer months, the Food For Fines Program was run again during June 2008. At that time the number of registered clients had ballooned to more than 650. Furthermore, the United Way had ceased funding the food bank and the State had cut funding as well. In response to this growing need, the Director instituted Food For Fines as a year round program. Since then and thanks to its generous patrons, the Library has furnished the equivalent of several hundred meals and has been awarded the Martin Luther King Service Certificate of 2008.
